Since becoming a Johnny, I have changed in the sense that I am now comfortable with being uncomfortable. There are so many opportunities I've been presented with thanks to St. John's, and a lot of them have pushed me out of my comfort zone. In the past, I would let this uncertainty stop me from going after what I want, but at SJU, with the help of great mentors and staff, I'm learning to truly take advantage of all of these amazing opportunities!
I chose SJU because it had everything I was looking for in a University: it's close to the city, has an extensive faith and service foundation, has a great program for my major, and the campus feels like my home. I love that SJU gives me a chance to not only explore my passions, but also to explore NYC and the world, and now that I'm here in my second year at SJU I know I couldn't have made better decision!
What makes SJU different is the differences between the students, and the acceptance and appreciation of these differences. Every student at St. John's has their own unique story and history, and there is always a place for them to share that story. I've never been part of such a diverse community, but I can honestly tell you that being part of such a community is truly special.
My favorite memory as a Johnny is the annual Christmas Tree Lighting. The event begins with all of the SJU students joining together and listening to the choir sing Christmas carols, and is followed with an epic fireworks show to celebrate the lighting of the Christmas tree and the start of the holiday season. The energy and Christmas spirit of the event was palpable, and I can't wait for the next Annual Tree Lighting!
