Class of 2018
Hometown: Sacramento, CA
Major: Hospitality Management
I chose St. John's because being from California and only applying to schools on the east coast I was unable to visit the schools I applied to. Being the first one in my family to go to college it was hard trying to figure out the application process, financial aid, etc. St. John's walked me through it every step of the way and I knew by attending the university making my transition across the state would be that much easier.
I'd say being a Johnny has helped me become more independent. So many of the students attending the university are very far from home and from family. By being a Johnny and finding my home here I have become more courageous and self assured.
SJU has such a strong community and family atmosphere. If you're a student, a professor, an alumni, everyone has the same drive and passion to help each other. In school you strive to be the highest academically. In New York city you're told it's every man for himself. Although we are a university in the middle of New York City there is no one not willing to help each other and that is so important.
It was right after convocation and we were separated into classrooms by major. I sat next to a girl with the same major as me who also had the same concentration. The entire first week of me being on campus I was nervous that I might have made the wrong choice and that might not be in the right place. Then I sat next to a girl, just as fresh out of high school as I was, far from home, with the same interests, taking a leap. I knew I wasn't alone. That is the best feeling and my favorite memory.
