Since becoming a Johnny I have changed by getting involved in organizations and becoming an active member in the SJU community. By joining and supporting various organizations I have discovered new interests and have also began to form new morals and ideologies and become my own person. From taking courses with professors that challenge common ideas and misconceptions, I have began to challenge myself with how I view current topics and issues and have since been able to form my own opinion.
SJU is different from other institutions because at SJU everyone you meet has a different story but somehow with everyone I have met, I have been able to connect with in one way or another. Within the SJU community, students can connect/ find common ground through common interests and even joining organizations/ clubs that support one's interest. If there isn't an organization/ club on campus that has what a student is looking for, students are able to start their own! The unlimited amount of opportunities and personal growth are endless, which is how SJU is different overall.
I chose SJU because when I had visited for Accepted Students Day, I felt at home. SJU created such a welcoming environment, as soon as I entered SJU I was greeted with nothing but smiling faces and right away I just felt a vibe seeing all the student ambassadors cheering as people entered the gates and doors, and everything felt connected. I could feel the love and just a vibe that was impossible to ignore. This same feeling and vibe of inclusiveness and love is why I chose SJU.
My favorite memory as a Johnny is definitely when I went to my first sending sunshine event. Sending sunshine is an event hosted by the Project Sunshine organization on campus, where students can help create Arts & Crafts Kits. Which are care packages used at medical centers when young patients face long hours of isolation, since family members and professionals cannot always be present. When I stepped into the first event I had went alone but I never felt alone, while putting these kits together I was able to communicate with other students and have a really memorable time helping others.
