Tour Guide at St. John's University
Class of 2019
Hometown: Brooklyn, NY
Since becoming a Johnny, I can honestly say that I've become a leader. I've always been a shy person, always the last person to raise her hand to volunteer for something, but the people I've met at SJU, from my professors to my friends, have empowered me to be more outgoing than ever before.
I've done some really fun things as a Johnny, but my favorite memory is the experience I had while doing my Academic Service Learning hours for my Discover New York class. I went to a program called Pajama Party and read bedtime stories to underprivileged children, and after we were finished each child was allowed to take home a book and pajamas. I've never seen a little boy get so excited over a book and a pair of pajamas, and I'll never forget what seeing that felt like. I'm so grateful to SJU for introducing me to that experience.
I think SJU is different because of its people. Everyone is kind and welcoming; someone always holds the door for you. Everyone is open-minded to people from all places, faiths, and cultures; no one is left out. It's not unusual to smile and say hello to someone you've never even meet while walking around campus. SJU is a place where you are constantly surrounded by caring, kind people.
I went to a tiny all-girl high school and had a nice experience, but I really wanted to go to a college where I'd meet people from all walks of life and also be able to challenge myself. SJU caught my attention when I heard about its diversity and wide range of exceptional majors, and knowing that it was located within the city I grew up in and love so much, it quickly became the perfect fit for me.
